Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance. Louisa McCord Smythe (1845-1928) was the wife of Augustine Thomas Smythe (1842-1914), a Charleston, South Carolina attorney and South Carolina state senator. She was the daughter of David James McCord (1797-1855) and Louisa Susanna Cheves. Mrs. Smythe served as president of the Charleston chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
